About Me

José Luís Silva

I was born in 69 and photograph since 06.

In the meantime, I read works of philosophy.

I live and work in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where I was born in 1969. I majored in philosophy at University of São Paulo in 94 with a study on Sigmund Freud’s The Interpretation of Dreams, under the guidance of Prof. Bento Prado Jr. I wrote, between 93 and 98, reviews and interviews for the literary books of the O Estado de São Paulo and Folha de São Paulo newspapers. Between 98 and 2004, I studied Dostoevsky’s literature and translated some of Poe’s short stories into Portuguese. Since then, I do the series of photographs presented here, and edit websites.

About My Work

My work reflects the human being who is close to me in his circumstance, and for this operates by means of series of photographs, and keeps mostly urban scenes and landscapes, records of worn-out everyday objects, and portraits.

Photographic Technique

I resort to different techniques of capture depending on the subject portrayed, and use black and white and color films in various formats (from 35mm to 8x10 inches), as well as digital cameras. The images are processed and printed by inkjet on cotton paper. Learn how to buy my work.
